Hellboy Volume 2: Wake the Devil by Mike Mignola

2.5/5 Stars

Hey everyone! Sorry for getting this review out so late tonight. Like I keep reiterating in all of my recent blog posts, to say I’ve been busy is an understatement. Between work, getting ready for this big trip I’m taking, and trying to see friends and family, I’ve been quite the busy beaver. I’m not trying to make excuses or complain, since these are all good things; I’m just saying bear with me on my recent sporadic posting times. I hope it will get better soon, but maybe I don’t. I like being busy. I promise I will always find time for blogging, though!

Anyway, now to get on with why you all are really here. I found a second hand copy of this graphic novel at Half Price Books. I believe I mentioned that in a Top Ten Tuesday post a few weeks ago. So, I bought it, hoping that volume 2 of this comic would be better than volume 1. However, I didn’t find that to be the case. I gave this book a 3 star rating on Goodreads, but am officially giving it a 2.5. Or maybe like 2.8.

I basically have the same complaints as I did with the first compilation in this series. To read my review of Hellboy Volume 1: Seed of Destruction click here.

I was really hoping that this story would give me a deeper knowledge of each character and their personalities. But, I found that each one was just as shallow as in the first comic. I wish Mignola would have taken the time to dive in deeper with background stories in this book without bringing about more shallow storyline that only kind of delves into the past. The storyline, overall, is a bit mediocre and still a bit confusing, similar to how I found the first installment to be. I was getting too much of what I didn’t want/need to know and not enough of what I did.

Given these complaints, I still do really like Mignola’s artwork. It’s my only saving grace for these comics. It’s simplistic yet wonderful at the same time. I don’t know what it is about the way he draws the panels, I just really like his style. I also always like the bonus sketches in the back from other artists or potential stills for the comic from Mignola.

Overall, as you have already read, I wasn’t very impressed with this book, but I’ll most likely pick up the third installment if I find it second hand for cheap, but I’m not in any rush to continue reading this series.

Thanks for putting up with my unreliable schedule and reading. As always, here are my other links. Stop by and follow, add, or chat: Tumblr, Goodreads, Instagram.
